For several years now, the Mercedes S Class has been capable of cruising on a freeway without any direct input from a human driver—the driver’s feet do not need to be on the pedals, and the driver’s hands do not need to be on the wheel. “Active Lane Keeping Assist” technology, now available in all Mercedes models, uses cameras and radar detectors to sense traffic-lane markings and other vehicles.
